Wow, there seems to be a lot of controversy over canola oil. Prior to reading the comments I never knew it could be bad for you. I mean, I knew it wasn’t good for you like olive oil but I didn’t know that it was harmful. Thanks for the information=)

I am from Canada, I have used canola oil all my life and I am healthy. I have also held the canola seeds in my hand, and seen them pressed and I have seen the oil come out of them. It’s a completely normal and natural oil. As far as I know. Now where are you getting your information, where are you from, has your information been peer reviewed?

Could your information have been spread by competing oil industries? How about palm oil? I have heard a lot of scare tactics to keep us away from palm oil, but when I lived in a palm producing country for 5 months, it was used widely and people seemed to be healthy.

Just like the way we are being told to dread the use of Stevia, which is a sugar substitute that originates from South America, and which is used by the south American people as well as other countries around the world. The North American sugar industry, such as corn sugar, has been lobbying governments to outlaw this plant’s use, and now you can buy it at Wal-Mart here in Canada, but it is in the pharmacy area far away from the regular food. All the while north American refined sugar is well know to cause diabetes. So tell me, how is your scare information any different than the information from what I just mentioned? Not trying to start an argument, just trying to find out if what you say could be true. I too am interested in making soap and canola is a relatively cheap and plentiful oil here in Canada.

I don’t think Englishnowtv was being rude or hateful at all.
Quite the opposite, I think he or she was simply showing their frustration at the ignorant posters. Canola Oil, in my opinion, should be banned from being a consumable product by the human population! Yes, it’s pressed from seeds, but the mixing process requires it to be mixed with a nasty cocktail of chemicals to get any decent margin of oil worth selling!
There are ways to make soap without using false oils that can essential be damaging to the health of you and your children!

The amount of rapeseed oil contained in Canola Oil is enough to allow for cooking without suspicion of something nasty in your fryer. It is also enough to allow cohesive bonding between elements, hence the ability to make soap. Some restaurants in the USA do not allow Canola oil use in their cooking facilities due to the risk to health ociated with its use. Canadian Oil (aka Canola oil) is used diversely across industries as a mechanical oil. The SAME oil they sell for cooking purposes!

Okay, I see where the confusion lies now.
Canola oil is added into the processing of rapeseed oil. With rapeseed, most of the oil is lost through evaporation if not processed quickly. The same oil that is used in machine maintenance and lubrication is the same oil that is used to make Canola Oil. The Canadian government marked Canola oil as safe, BECAUSE of the organic materials contained within it, but failed to inform the world of the lethality of petroleum byproducts used in the ingredients.

I agree with you, in terms of being healthy – trust me, I’m an organic-garden-growing hippie myself, but I think you misunderstood my last reply…If canola oil is indeed an inorganic petroleum product, then HOW can it even become soap? I have made soap that was more than 60% canola – if it were all a non-saponifiable petroleum product, there is NO WAY the lye could react with it, and it would never turn into soap,but it did. Which leads me to believe it is an oil of organic origin.

EXACTLY! Anything with Canola oil as an ingredient, cannot be digested or ejected from the human body! Why would you want to smear the stuff all over your skin, thinking you’re doing good when in actual fact, you may as well just jump into a pool of oil and kill yourself? The blood cannot dispose of canola oil, pure and simple. Disguising a poisonous element behind rapeseed is both criminal and disgusting! I’m sure the Canadians can think of better ways to make money other than death!

Petroleum-based …
Petroleum-based oils do not saponify with sodium hydroxide. I have used soaps made from 100% canola oil, for testing purposes. They’re not good soaps, but they are SOAP, and have been saponified with an alkali. How then, if they are largely petroleum based, did they even become soap, since inorganic oils do not saponify?
